In light of recent FDA cautions about Areca catechu (Areca palm), we’ve removed all palm leaf products from our site that may be made from this plant.
The concern stems from naturally occurring toxic alkaloids found in parts of the Areca catechu tree, including the leaves. While there are two different Areca species, we believe catechu is the most likely used in these products. Until we can confirm the type, we’re taking this precaution to protect your beloved bunnies and small pets.
FDA has not issued a recall because the health concern results from long-term use and is not an acute public health concern. However, the FDA has issued an import alert on palm plates and bowls made from A. catechu leaf sheaths and is urging retailers, distributors, and importers to take the necessary steps to confirm that their products are not manufactured from the leaf sheaths, leaves, or other parts of the A. catechu palm plant.
This news came as a surprise to us, too. As soon as we learned of it, we paused all sales of the potentially affected items. While the warning is for human use, the concerns are based on animal studies in mice, so we’re choosing to err on the side of caution.
Your trust means everything to us, and we’ll provide updates as we learn more.
For now, we do have other safe palm options, like the Palm Pocket and the Palm Bunny Bag Bundle that bunnies like too. Free from the Areca Catechu Palm. They may not have the "crunch" that bunnies love, but they can still offer shredding and chewing fun.
